Install Open VM Tools on Debian

Today is a good day. I’ve been rebuilding a few of my home lab VMs in Ubuntu and Debain and discovered something I wish I’d found a long time ago. You see, to install Open VM tools, I’d have normally followed this guide, supplied by VMware. If you click that link you’ll see how extensive and footery the process is.

Today however, I discovered that Open VM Tools are available (for how long I don’t know) through the Debian repositories. This means the package can be installed with two commands.

  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools

Done. Happy Admin.
